* College of Coastal Georgia, 8001 Lakes Blvd. East, Kingsland, will host a presentation on the life and work of Harriet Tubman called "Journey to Freedom" at noon in the Camden Center Auditorium. The college will also host the program at 1 p.m. Thursday at its Brunswick campus in the Stembler Theater, 3700 Altama Ave., Brunswick.
Thursday, Feb. 23
* Sons of Confederate Veterans will host guest speaker Dick Watson, a Brunswick historian, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Ole Times Country Buffet, 665 Scranton Road, Brunswick. Watson will be impersonating and discussing Edmund Ruffin, the "Thomas Jefferson of the Confederacy." Details: 230-1125.
Saturday, Feb. 25
* Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site, 5556 Hwy. 17 North, Brunswick, will host a Black History Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature storytelling, singing, performances and a special presentation. Tickets are $6.50 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3.75 for kids ages 6 to 17. Details: 264-7333.

* Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Zeta Iota Omega Chapter in Brunswick will host its 104th Founder's Day's Celebration on at 3:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, 1221 Egmont St., Brunswick. Dr. Robin E. Hedgeman will be the keynote speaker.
Tuesday, Feb. 28
* The Civil War Round Table will hold its meeting at 7 p.m. at Sea Palms Conference Center on St. Simons Island. The speaker will be attorney Robert Jenkins, who will lecture on the Battle of Peach Tree Creek. Dinner and cocktails will be served at 5:30 p.m. before the lecture. The cost is $25 per person. * The Golden Isles Arts and Humanities Association will host the Big Read event, "Not Schoolbook History: Two Hunters, Hammett, and a Falcon" at 7 p.m. at Historic Ritz Theatre, 1530 Newcastle St. Brunswick. The event will feature Dashiell Hammett's granddaughter, Julie Rivett, and Hammett scholar and biographer Richard Layman, who will share discoveries about the life, work and literary legacy of the mysterious and complicated author.
* Golden Isles Rose Society will hold its meeting at 6:45 p.m. at St. Simons Presbyterian Church, 205 Kings Way, St. Simons Island. Anyone interested in learning how to grow roses is welcome to attend.
Wednesday, Feb. 29
* College of Coastal Georgia, 3700 Altama Ave., Brunswick, will host a Federal Student Aid Application Workshop for any college-bound students from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Campus Center. The workshop is free for students and their families.

* Glynn Environmental Coalition will host a First Friday Lunch at 11 a.m. at the Corner Cafe, 1312 Newcastle St., Brunswick. The guest speaker will be Charlie Creveling, division manager for Southland Waste Systems discussing the Glynn County recycling program.
Saturday, March 3
* Glynn County Rotary will hold its 11th annual Chili Cook Off fund raiser from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Neptune Park in Pier Village, St. Simons Island. Music will be provided by the Stringrays. Tickets are $5 in advance, $8 at the entrance and $3 for children 10 and under.
* Boy Scouts Troop 248 will host a Meadows Chicken Dinner from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Thorpe Building at St. Simons United Methodist Church, 624 Ocean Blvd., St. Simons Island. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children in advance, $8 for adults at the door and $6 for children. Tickets can be purchased at the church, Vann's Barber Shop, any troop member or at Dr. Suzanne Haley's office. All proceeds benefit Troop 248.

* Golden Isles Fiberarts Guild will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. in the Parish Hall of Holy Nativity Church, 615 Mallery St., St. Simons Island. Laurie Lovell, a professional Fiber Artist from Savannah, will present and discuss a variety of her work. Details: 996-2967.

* The Southeast Coastal Georgia Computer Club will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2801 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island.
