Golf titles highlight strong year for GA By MURRAY POOLE The Brunswick NewsHighlighting Glynn Acad-emy's 2005 sports year was the amazing performance of the Red Terrors' and Lady Terrors' golf teams.Both the GA boys and girls squads cruised to their second consecutive Class AAAAA state championships on Jekyll Island with John Allison's Terrors shooting a 579 to best Northview by 16 strokes. Glynn's score was the second best in state history behind the record 569 total posted by the Terrors in 2004. GA's Chris Johnson was the state medalist with 141, via rounds of 72-69.It was the Glynn boys' fourth state crown in the past six years and their 12th state title overall. The Terrors earlier captured their 10th consecutive Region 3-AAAAA championship with a 304 score. Don Thomas earned medalist honors by shooting a 69.After winning their sixth straight region title with a 149 tally, the Lady Terrors of Diana Cason and Steve Waters proceeded to shoot a 150 score on Jekyll Island to claim their second consecutive state championship by a whopping 10 strokes. In doing so, the Glynn girls became the first girls team to win the Class AAAAA title in back-to-back years.Rebecca Durham and Laura Hall each shot 75 to pace GA's victory. Durham earned medalist honors in the region tournament with a 73.The Glynn Academy teams also celebrated several other championships this past spring.In soccer, Bobby Brockman's Terrors (15-3-2) charged to their fourth straight Region 3-AAAAA title and fifth in the past six years, while Gary Larkins' Lady Terrors (13-6-2) broke through with their first region championship. In the state playoffs, the Glynn boys toppled Coffee 6-0 and Fayette County 3-2 before falling to Parkview 4-0 in the quarterfinal round. The Lady Terrors also advanced to the state quarterfinals, beating Colquitt County 3-0 in the first round and winning a 2-1 shootout over Fayette County in the second round before being defeated by South Forsyth, 6-0.In postseason honors, Terrors juniors David Blackshear and Matthew Lee shared Region 3-AAAAA player-of-the-year laurels and were joined on the all-region team by seniors Woody Sapp, Parker Wiles, Mike Durrence and Scott Risi and junior Mike Frazier. Five Lady Terrors were named all-region with GA junior Kari Hodgdon selected as the league's offensive player of the year. Also making all-region were seniors Brittany Melcher and Stephanie Wade and sophomores Odet Douglass and Amanda Baxter.The GA tennis teams also continued to dominate Region 3-AAAAA in 2005. Burnett Rooks' Red Terrors toppled Jenkins 4-1 for their seventh consecutive region title, while Holly Wiles' Lady Terrors trimmed Camden County 3-2 for the GA girls' sixth straight region crown.And like the Glynn soccer teams, the tennis teams advanced to the state quarterfinal round before being ousted. The Terrors (12-11) nipped Tift County 3-2 in the opening round and then bested Fayette County by the same score in round two before then falling to Lowndes 5-0 in the quarterfinals. The Lady Terrors (16-5) clicked to identical 4-1 wins over Coffee and Newnan in the first two rounds before then being nipped 3-2 by Colquitt County in the Elite Eight.In baseball, it was another productive season for Chuck Fehr's Terrors as they rolled to a 17-12 season record and a 13-3 Region 3-AAAAA record, a mark that enabled Glynn to take second place in the league behind champion Brunswick High. In the state playoffs, the Terrors swept a doubleheader from Colquitt County, by 4-3 and 10-4 (in nine innings), to advance to the second round of state for the first time in 20 years. There, Glynn fell to a strong Starr's Mill team, 1-0 and 17-0.Glynn Academy senior pitcher Cletus Jessup chalked up a 10-4 mound record with a 1.29 ERA and 125 strikeouts, the third-highest total in the Terrors' modern history. For his performance, Jessup was chosen as The News Glynn County Boys Star of the Spring. Jessup also was named Region 3-AAAAA Player of the Year, as selected by the region coaches, and was joined on the all-region first team by GA senior left fielder Brian Strickland and senior catcher Dane Fehr. GA's Kody Paul and Alex Lucas were named to the all-region second team.Also in the spring, the GA girls track team captured third place in the Region 3-AAAAA meet. Qualifying for state were Candace Wright, Allie Dickson, Chantrelle Harris, and the 4x400 relay team of Wright, Tieura Quick, Dominique Brown, Julicia Mangram, Valencia Kelly and Harris. In the boys region meet, the GA boys placed sixth with Patrick Whittenburg, Cedric Ellison and Akeem Brown qualifying for state.In basketball, Dan Moore's GA boys clicked to a 17-9 record, but were stunned by Groves 60-57 in the opening round of the Region 3-AAAAA tournament. The Lady Terrors (19-8), however, downed Groves and Windsor Forest in the region tourney before falling to Beach in the championship game, 63-33. In the state tournament, Theresa Adams' girls raced past Coffee 69-51 before then bowing to Riverdale in the second round in Macon, 62-46.Glynn junior forward April McClendon was named as The News Coastal Georgia Girls Player of the Year and was joined on the All-Area team by fellow junior Sierra Williams. GA boys named to the All-Area team were juniors Greg Cross and Greg Peacock.Also in winter sports, the GA wrestling team placed second in the Region 3-AAAAA championships behind champion Camden County and earned a berth in the Class AAAAA meet in Macon. GA wrestlers capturing individual region championships were Bronson Proctor, Alan Hull, Mike Watson, Joey Kicklighter and Forrest Strickland. The Glynn Academy swim team also came up big in 2005, with the GA girls team bettering the performances of a number of Atlanta schools to take third place in the Class AAAAA state meet. Caroline Jones and Zach Rose each won two individual state titles, and the GA girls' 400-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Ansley Otte, Christine Currier, Julie Richards and Jones won the state championship in that event.This fall, Jesse Knowles' Glynn Academy volleyball team fell in the Region 3-AAAAA Tournament championship game, losing a grueling five-game match to Camden County. With their region runner-up finish, the Lady Terrors earned a trip to the state tournament a second straight year.
