Business workshops highlight partnership

Entering the business world is both thrilling and a tad overwhelming.
But it doesn't have to be that way. Knowledge usually makes the difference between a success and failure, and a local partnership is looking to increase positive outcomes.
The Small Business Development Center, which is funded by the University of Georgia, has teamed up with the Brunswick/Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce and the Coastal Georgia Community College to offer educational seminars.
The classes cover a broad range of topics and are given over the course of the year. Most of the workshops are offered in the Conference Center at the local community college and are scheduled to take place after the business hours. The costs of the courses are usually between $30 and $40.     Full Story

Consumers stretch their dollars

NEW YORK — Consumers gave some of the nation's retailers a little relief in April after months of dismal sales, gravitating toward less expensive discounters and wholesale clubs but generally still shying away from stores selling clothes and other non-necessities.
Monthly sales reports issued Thursday were better than expected, but still pointed to a consumer contending with rising gas prices, sagging home values and worries about jobs. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Costco Wholesale Corp. were among the top performers last month, while most mall-based apparel stores struggled.
"Consumers are focusing on value and price points and stretching their dollars," said Ken Perkins president of RetailMetrics LLC, a research company in Swampscott, Mass. "They are feeling the pinch on multiple fronts."
He and other analysts expect only a modest uptick in sales in May and June as consumers spend tax rebate checks that are starting to arrive.    Full Story
