Ryan says that he puts time in because he gets a satisfaction out of helping others.
"People ask me why do I volunteer and I tell them, I live on a island and someday you will be helping me," Ryan said.
But he also lends a hand closer to home. Ryan responds to house fires in the area and helps to open shelters in case of flooding.
"Locally, we try to give them immediate care needs, like housing. If there has been a fire, they can't stay in the house, so we'll put them up in a hotel for three nights. We just help them with food, clothing or whatever they need. We give them some money to spend and we also refer them to Goodwill or the Salvation Army," he said.
