In the emotional whirlwind that has followed Sunday's destructive tornado, Glynn County residents are finding refuge in the kindness of neighbors. Slanted rain and destructive winds swept past Kevin Barber's house Sunday, but he never heard the rumble of a passing freight train that is often associated with tornadoes. "But we knew it was a tornado," said Barber, a resident of 100 Enclave Lane, in The Enclave at Sea Palms West on St. Simons Island, where the tornado struck. Once the storm passed, Barber and his son, Charles-Ryan, stepped outside to find that their neighborhood had been flipped upside down. Tree branches were strewn about the street, neighbor's homes were all but destroyed and uprooted live oaks were resting on nearby cars.

The Brunswick News
Defend Downtown Brunswick, Brunswick Landing Marina, Atlantic Southeast Enterprises and Brunswick Landing are appealing last week's ruling by Superior Court Judge Ronnie Rahn III of the Atlantic Judicial Circuit. Rahn, assigned the case after judges in the Brunswick Judicial Circuit removed themselves, ruled in favor of the defendants the five city commissioners and seven county commissioners dismissing the lawsuit filed Feb. 8. The suit claimed the city had failed to properly abandon I Street for the jail expansion and that the county had violated the Georgia open meetings law by holding private discussions on the expansion. In his order, Rahn rejected both claims. He said he could not grant the requests because the city has not officially abandoned I Street and the group could not pinpoint an exact date when the county commission allegedly held a private meeting that violated the open meetings law.

Traffic flow on Ga. 303 may change if the Glynn County Commission approves a measure to add a traffic signal in the area. During its 6 p.m. meeting today, the commission will be asked to approve a construction contract for improvements to the intersection of Ga. 303 and Blythe Island Drive. Jim Bruner, county engineer, said the improvements would include an acceleration and deceleration lane on Ga. 303 and a traffic signal at its intersection with Blythe Island Drive. The improvements would also turn Cut Off Road into a right-turn-only roadway, which would force drivers wishing to turn left onto Ga. 303 to go to the traffic signal.

Isakson targets
U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., says temporarily suspending the accumulation of oil during a time of high prices is the least the federal government can do. Isakson and 97 other senators voted on an amendment that would require the U.S. Department of Energy to halt further deposits of domestic crude oil into the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve as long as the price of crude oil remains above $75 per barrel. Wednesday, the cost of a barrel of crude had risen to $124. The amendment required 60 votes to pass. "There are no quick fixes in dealing with this issue, but there are things the federal government can and must do," Isakson said. "Temporarily halting deposits to the reserve sends the signal to the global market that the United States will take measures to address excessive oil prices."

The Facility Group will have someone looking over its shoulder during construction of the Golden Isles Career Center. Members of the Glynn County Board of Education have agreed to pay Gude Management of Atlanta $226,000 annually to keep an eye on the $19.4 million construction project. Millard Allen, chair of the board's finance committee, which made the recommendation to the full board during its regular meeting Tuesday, considers it insurance. "With all the noise going on about The Facilities Group, it just seemed to be the prudent thing for us to do," Allen said Wednesday.
