Police identify remains
A body found half buried in a wooded area north of Darien Wednesday has been identified.

The man was identified Thursday as 56-year-old Joseph Leon Speight of Crescent, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab following an autopsy of the remains.

McIntosh County Sheriff Deputy Maj. Danny Lowe said the autopsy revealed Speight had been shot.

A murder investigation has begun, Lowe said.

Lowe did not disclose whether Speight had been shot more than once, the type of gun used in the crime or the identities of any potential suspects, citing an ongoing criminal investigation.

Deputies found Speight's partially decomposed body while searching the area. He was found in a shallow grave in the woods off Sams Memorial Lane, near Smith Road in McIntosh County.

Police had been looking for Speight since Saturday, when he was reported missing.

Anyone with information about the murder of Joseph Leon Speight is asked to call McIntosh County Sheriff's Office Capt. Robert J. Kicklighter or Sgt. Dorothy Jenkins at 437-5870 or 437-3912.
