Veterans clinic slated to open
Eight days.

That's how much longer Glynn County will have to wait until the long-sought veteran's outpatient clinic becomes a reality in Brunswick.

The opening time and date at Summit Professional Plaza No. 2, 1111 Glynco Parkway, will be 8 a.m. Oct. 6. The clinic is on the second floor.

"The clinic will be open then, but it won't be 100 percent staffed," said Janine Cameron, public affairs officer for the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin. "It will be a gradual process."

When fully staffed, clinic services will include primary care, mental health, social work, pharmaceutical counseling, optometry, podiatry and dietetic counseling services.

Other services will be available through the use of Telehealth, a videoconferencing system that allows consultations with doctors that do not require direct examination, Cameron said.

"We're still transitioning veterans right now," she said.

"We're registering them for the clinic."

The clinic has been four years getting here.

It was announced in 2006, but it wasn't until May of 2010 that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs signed a contract for space in the Summit Professional Plaza.

The delays invited criticism from Woody Woodside, president of the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce, and U.S. Sens. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., and Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., as well as U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, R-1. It was Kingston who first announced that the clinic was coming.

The clinic will open without any fanfare. A ribbon-cutting ceremony won't be held until Nov. 9.

"Four weeks give us a little more time to settle in," Cameron said. "The veterans are our first priority."

She said veterans in the area who have not signed up should do so.

The clinic will begin seeing veterans with appointments on opening day. There are about 5,000 veterans in Glynn County.
