Restaurants join fundraising effort for students
Archie Prince is always proud of the food he cooks as executive chef at Coastal Kitchen at Morningstar Marina.

This weekend, though, his pride will swell because he knows his food is going to a good cause.

For the third year in a row, Coastal Kitchen is a participating sponsor of the annual Dine Out for Kids program to benefit Communities in Schools of Glynn County. It's a time when participating restaurants donate a portion of their proceeds to the charity dedicated to keeping students from dropping out of high school.

For Prince, cooking for a cause makes each meal taste a little better.

"Anything we can do to help better a kid's life, we want to do," Prince said.

Jeff Montaigne, the owner of Coastal Kitchen, said when he learned about the program, he jumped at the chance to be involved.

"I believe in their cause," Montaigne said. "I see too many kids who don't have the parents I had that encouraged me to stay in school and to do well."

Montaigne said Coastal Kitchen and 10 other area restaurants will donate around 10 percent of their proceeds from Thursday through Sunday to Communities in Schools.

The charity's executive director, Jill Mitchell, said she is hoping to receive around $9,000 from this year's event.

Mitchell said the money goes to programs like Focus Graduation, which helped 17 students at risk of dropping out earn their high school diplomas.

In all, Communities in Schools helps more than 100 high school students a year.

"The partnership we have with the school system is the key to making our programs work," Mitchell said.

Making the Dine Out for Kids successful relies heavily on marketing, Mitchell said. Sponsor restaurants and Southeast Georgia Health System have pitched in to provide marketing help to make Glynn County's Dine Out For Kids, which is a national event, one of the top fundraisers of all Communities in Schools programs in the state.

Eating at any of the following restaurants will help raise money for Communities in Schools of Glynn County through the Dine Out for Kids program: Coastal Kitchen, Morrison at Southeast Georgia Health System, Halyards, Tramici, Bubba Garcia's, Gnat's Landing, Right on Q, Locos Grill & Pub, The Driftwood Bistro, Crabdaddy's and Jekyll Island Club.
