Trailer could aid in disaster
College of Coastal Georgia Police Chief Bryan Sipe used to get nervous when he thought about how the school would help students in the aftermath of a natural disaster.

His fears have eased a bit with the donation of an evacuation trailer to College of Coastal Georgia.

The 20-foot trailer holds 50 cots, 60 blankets, a 7,500-watt gas-powered generator that can power the trailer and its equipment for up to eight hours and other equipment.

The trailer and all the equipment cost $20,200 and was paid for by grant money from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, a nonprofit arm of the national Firehouse Subs fast food chain.

"I realized that, from talking to Jay (Wiggins) and people at the Red Cross, not only did the college have a need for this, but our community really has a need for something like this," said Sipe, referring to Jay Wiggins, a Glynn County police captain and director of the county Emergency Management Agency.

The initial idea for the trailer came in 2011, after an evacuation plan for students included two other schools, one in Tifton, which is where the students in Brunswick would go, and another farther north.

The possibility of one part of the plan not working led Sipe and other college officers to believe that the school needed an emergency trailer.

"There were just a lot of logistics involved that scared me, because I thought if any piece of this breaks down in evacuations we're going to be in trouble," said Sipe.

While the specially designed trailer will be stored at the college, it can be used as a regional tool to assist anyone who has a need for it.

Something like a heavy-duty pickup truck will be needed to haul the trailer along the coast, with a response of time of about 30 minutes, Sipe said.

"We're going to add more cots and blankets, because we need to be prepared to house several hundred students if we have to," he said.
