Early voting popular
Thousands of residents in Glynn County are taking advantage of a chance to cast a ballot before Election Day, Nov. 6.

Before the polls even opened Monday, lines were forming at Office Park on Gloucester Street in Brunswick; Fire Station No. 2 on Demere Road on St. Simons Island; and at Ballard Complex in Glynn County, said Glynn County Board of Elections Supervisor Cindy Johnson.

"As of (Monday) morning, 6,824 have voted in office, and we have sent out over 2,000 absentee ballots," Johnson said. "We have been very busy at our three polling locations (Monday)."

Those lines kept steady as the day went on. By Monday afternoon, the wait was only 30 minutes.

"We've been very pleased with the turnout," Johnson said. "Saturday voting went very well. We like the early voting period. It gives us some relief on Election Day."

Saturday voting alone yielded 680 ballots, a good indication that the rest of the week will push voting numbers even higher.

"We've been averaging around 500 to 700 votes a day, so seeing 680 on Saturday when we were open a shorter time is good," Johnson said. "We've been very busy. So far we've had 14 percent of active voters vote, and with three locations, we could see that be about 30 percent by the end of the week."

The Glynn County Board of Elections is busy manning its three early voting locations this week and has little time to answer the phone on its main line.

When callers dial 554-7060, they'll hear an automated voice message system giving information about early voting, absentee ballots and polling locations.

"We did it four years ago, in the last election," Johnson said. "It gets so busy here, and we just can't handle it. We'll be back up and running on Election Day to help anyone with any questions."

Until then, Johnson suggests voters visit the Glynn County Board of Elections website and the My Voter Page at Voters are required to present a government-issued photo identification when voting in person, such as a current or expired Georgia driver's license or valid Department of Driver Services identification card.
