Hotel being revamped as resort
Oceanside Inn and Suites, part of the Jekyll Island landscape for more than 50 years, is about to get a new look as a Holiday Inn Resort. The motel at 711 Beach View Drive North was closed to the public in September and will undergo large-scale renovations. Reopening as a Holiday Inn Resort is expected in late spring.

Jason Smith, former general manager of Oceanside and now general manager of NorthPointe Hospitality Management, said furniture liquidation has begun and will continue for several weeks. NorthPointe has been contracted by Georgia Coast Advisors, owner of the Holiday Inn Resort, to manage the new motel.

"For the most part, everything is going," Smith said. "The liquidator is here to make sure all furniture, fixtures, appliances, banquet stuff, etc., is leaving the property with new owners."

Starting Thursday, the public will be able to buy motel furniture in the liquidation sale. The renovation work will begin around the third week of October, Smith said. "Demolition of the guest rooms will begin," he said. "We're basically gutting them, taking it back to the cinder block walls."

Construction likely will begin the first week of November, which includes replacement of plumbing and electrical systems, construction of a new roof and restructuring of the lobby.

"And then we just hope and pray for good weather, and that things work in a timely fashion and that we're ready to re-open and celebrate the grand opening of the Holiday Inn Resort in the month of May, hopefully before Memorial Day," Smith said.

Smith hopes the motel will help provide another signature location on Jekyll Island that will attract new guests and bring back former visitors.

"I can't tell you how many guests I've spoken to over the years who came here as kids and are now grandparents. They've brought their kids and grandkids here," he said.

"Oceanside was a little tired, and now it's going to be one of the premier oceanfront locations on the island, and, hopefully, we'll attract conventioneers that used to dominate the landscape here in the '80s and early '90s."
