Jekyll entry to be updated
Jekyll Island's entrance is getting a major facelift.

Construction on the Ben Fortson Parkway at the base of the Downing Musgrove Causeway bridge is set to begin today.

Crews will renovate the area that held the old Jekyll Island greeting station.

The work is expected to last about 45 days and should be completed, weather permitting, by the end of January.

The project, part of the state park's overall facelift, aims to rework the roadway into an easier-to-use intersection.

Construction follows the September opening of the Guest Information Plaza and the new automated toll booth on the Downing Musgrove Causeway that replaced the former greeting station this past summer.

The new entryway and plaza are just two parts of Jekyll's island-wide revitalization plan that includes the newly constructed Great Dunes Park and Jekyll Island Convention Center.

A Westin hotel and Hyatt Place hotel, along with a retail village, are expected to break ground some time next year.

Motorists entering or leaving the island are urged to be mindful of the lane shifts during construction.
