Relay for Life sets higher goals for 2014 fundraiser
Kelly Spaeder is ready to kick off this year's 20th annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

With three months until the big event, Spaeder, senior community manager for the American Cancer Society of Glynn County, is hoping to raise excitement and participation in Relay For Life, a major fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

The event is set for April 25 at the Brunswick Exchange Club Fairgrounds.

The cancer society held a rally meeting Thursday at Ziggy Mahoney's on St. Simons Island to give team captains and team members fundraising and recruitment ideas.

Funds raised pay for cancer research.

"We just want to begin building momentum for the event," said Spaeder. "We want people to move into a fundraiser mode.

"We're upping the goal a little bit this year. We're hoping to have at least 100 team captains, with 1,300 participants," she said.

The goal is $300,000, or $30,000 more than last year's total.

As of Thursday, the organization had raised $32,693 and had 51 teams with 268 participants.

Spaeder believes the chapter should be able to reach its target given all the schools, businesses, churches, civic organizations and residents who come together for Relay for Life.

Usually a total of 8,000 people turn out at the two-day event to show support to the those suffering with cancer and their families, she said.
