Two-day book sale begins on St. Simons
The Literary Guild of St. Simons Island is holding its annual two-day book sale from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in the St. Simons Island Casino Atrium, 530 Beachview Drive on St. Simons Island.

It will open again from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the same location.

Bruce Rumage, a member of the Literary Guild of St. Simons Island for almost 13 years and one of the book sale coordinators, said he is expecting a greater turnout this year.

"This (event) is growing more and more each year and people are becoming aware of it," he said. "We had (nearly) 500 members show up last year.

"We hope to bring more residents in this year. We think this is a worthy cause and we hope we don't have many books to bring back."

The nonprofit organization strives to encourage residents to pick up more books and to put down the remote.

"We give the books to health clinics, we donate some to Goodwill and we donate some to the Brunswick library," he said. "Anything we can do to encourage reading is where our goal is."

Rumage says all the money raised will go towards several programs the Guild puts on each year, including film screenings, book sales, cultural events and festivals, such as the premier Georgia Literary Festival.

Last year, the organization raised around $16,000.

"We have done very well and we expect to (contribute) to a better community atmosphere," he said.
