'No-kill' shelter gaining support
After witnessing firsthand the techniques and success of Target Zero Institute of Jacksonville, Marci De Sart is thrilled that TZI will present its program to Glynn County Monday.

TZI collaborates with communities to help reach no-kill status at domestic animal shelters, something De Sart, president of the Glynn County Animal Services Advisory Board, feels is desperately needed locally.

"I approached them about coming," she said, noting she attended a day-long event in Jacksonville to learn about the program. "It was a very enlightening and educational day and I have wanted to bring them to Glynn County ever since."

Using innovative techniques, Target Zero has helped over 50 communities with no-kill transitions, including the Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services.

Staggering euthanization numbers in Glynn County prompted De Sart and the advisory board to look for ways they could help local animal services attain the same status.

Despite rising adoption rates, the local shelter euthanized nearly 2,000 animals in 2013, or about 62 percent of the animals taken and dropped off at the shelter.

To be considered a no-kill shelter, 90 percent of the animals entering the shelter must leave the shelter alive.

"We have so much room for improvement," De Sart said. "I believe that Glynn County is ready to leave regressive practices behind and embrace constructive, life-saving programs and services."

De Sart knows it goes far beyond just animal services changing a few policies.

"The only way we're going to tackle this issue is through collaboration, which TZI is a huge proponent of," De Sart said. "I'm hoping that, as a community, Glynn County will begin to not just educate themselves but also think of progressive ways that groups and entities can collaborate to institute new policies and programs that will help to save lives. Together, we can leverage resources to increase adoptions and lower the number of animals coming through the door."
