Visitors center hosting open house
ST. MARYS -- The St. Marys Welcome Center has completed its move to the Ward Hernandez Building next to City Hall.

Now, it's time to get the word out that it's open for business at its new location.

Angela Wigger, director of the St. Marys Convention and Visitors Center, said the St. Marys Kiwanis Club is hosting an open house from 4:30 to 6 p.m. today at its new office, 400 Osborne St.

She said it's important for residents to know the center is open for business.

"A lot of times, people in the community are the first contact with visitors," she said.

City officials approved Wigger's request to move into the city building rent-free after the landlord at the old location raised the rent, which tourism officials said they could not afford. The tourism department will be responsible for paying for utilities.

The new office gives tourism officials the ability to offer more services because the offices are in a larger building.

It has a spacious room where tour groups as large as 50 people can gather to watch a movie featuring the area. At the old location, only eight people could watch the movie at one time.

The building has two board rooms for private meetings, both of which have already been rented for different functions, including legal depositions by out-of-town lawyers.

Wigger said it's too early to determine if the number of visitors will decrease since the center is about five blocks from the old office, which was near the city's waterfront where most of the tourist activity occurs.

She said the new location is a good starting point for visitors because it's across the street from Orange Hall, a popular tourist attraction, and near some of the city's gift shops and historic churches.

Wigger said visitors will see all the familiar attractions that were housed in the center.

"Everything at the prior welcome center was brought here," she said.
