Group plans event to help veterans
A group planning to host injured veterans and their families on Jekyll Island is asking residents for help to make the weekend the best possible.

American Legion Post 9, in Brunswick, is hosting its second Warrior's Weekend July 20-22 on Jekyll Island.

The event is intended to offer injured soldiers recovering in the Warrior's Transition Unit at Fort Stewart a carefree weekend with family and friends.

But to make it all happen, the post is asking Glynn County businesses, residents and organizations to step up and help out -- particularly with a picnic which will be held at 4 p.m. July 20 at Great Dunes Park on Jekyll Island.

"We will be feeding and entertaining all of these folks and would appreciate any help we can get from individuals and organizations in our area," veterans advocate Joni Bennett, one of the event's organizers, said.

Along with monetary donations to help cover the cost of feeding the more than 1,000 people expected to attend the event, Bennett said the post is looking to borrow tables, chairs and pop-up tents from residents for the day of the event, and it is asking volunteers to donate their time.

"We are looking for local bands that would be willing to donate their time to play one or two 45-minute sets," Bennett said, saying acoustical music is preferred.

In addition to musical entertainment, the post is looking for people to help with face painting, carnival games and other arts and crafts, Bennett said.

"We are really just trying to give our wounded soldiers a weekend of fun that they deserve," Bennett said.
