About Brunswick and the Golden Isles

Brunswick is the county seat of Glynn County and is the only incorporated municipality within the county. It is located on Georgia’s Atlantic seacoast, about 75 miles south of Savannah and 65 miles north of Jacksonville, Fla.
The climate is mild, with a year-round average temperature of 68 degrees. The coldest months of winter are January and February, but temperatures rarely dip below 40. The hottest months are August and September, when temperatures soar to 90 degrees and above.
Annual average rainfall is 54 inches.
Across the famed Marshes of Glynn and the Intracoastal Waterway is a chain of barrier islands known as “the Golden Isles.” Made up of St. Simons Island, Little St. Simons Island, Sea Island and Jekyll Island, all are surrounded by marsh on the west side and sand beaches and ocean on the east side. Only St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island are accessible to the public by car. Jekyll Island, which is a state-owned park with full-time residents and hotels, charges a $3 parking fee to all daily visitors.
The area offers an array of housing options. Among them are renovated Victorian homes in the Brunswick Historic district, beach cottages on St. Simons Island, multi-million-dollar mansions on Sea Island and established subdivisions and subdivisions still being constructed on St. Simons Island and throughout mainland Glynn County (and also in neighboring Camden and McIntosh counties).
Housing prices can range from less than $100,000 in Brunswick to the $5 million range on Sea Island and parts of St. Simons Island. Typical new-construction prices on the mainland are in the $100,000 to upper-$200,000 range on the mainland and in the $300,000-and-up range on St. Simons Island. Some houses can be found on St. Simons Island for about $200,000.
If you are planning a beach walk during a visit, you will want to check the tides. Georgia’s coast experiences the second-largest tidal flux on the Eastern Seaboard, with as much as 8 feet of difference between high and low tides. There are four tides every 24 hours, two high tides alternating with two low tides, each approximately 6 hours apart.
For the latest tide information, visit the Web site of the Jacksonville office of the National Weather Service at http://www.srh.noaa.gov/jax/tides.shtml.
