Good Friday heralds arrival of Easter

Fri, Mar 21, 2008

By BRANDEE A. THOMAS

The Brunswick News

Christian churches in Brunswick and the Golden Isles and worldwide are excitedly preparing this week for one of the most significant events in their religion – Easter Sunday, the day they celebrate the joyous resurrection of Jesus Christ.

But some will observe another event today that is just as important: Good Friday.

"Good Friday is the day that Christ was crucified on the cross for the redemption of sins," says Jonie Crews, education specialist at First Baptist Church, 708 Mansfield St., Brunswick.

While members of the First Baptist Church will join most other Christians and observe the event privately, others will attend a special service that will be held in remembrance of the day Jesus was nailed to the cross.

A number of churches plan services on both the mainland and on St. Simons Island today.

* Christ Church, Frederica, 6329 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island, "The Seven Last Words of Jesus" noon to 3 p.m. (20-minute sessions that are open to the public).

* St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 405 Howe St., Brunswick, Good Friday Stations of the cross at noon; Celebration of Our Lord's Passion at 7 p.m.
* St. Simons Presbyterian Church, 205 Kings Way, St. Simons Island, community-wide Good Friday service at noon.

* Grace United Methodist Church, 1711 Albany St., Brunswick, Tenebrae service at noon.
