In the Gullah-Geeche culture, it's the equivalent of a warm welcome: "Come join us."According to Jamal Toure, resident scholar and program coordinator for Geeche Kunda, the Gullah Geeche Museum and Cultural Center in Riceboro, a time for unification is approaching.April 19 will be the site's fourth annual Gathering at Geechee Kunda, an opportunity for people to learn about the Gullah-Geechee culture, which has been part of coastal Georgia for centuries.
"It's a focus on all aspects of African Culture," said Toure. "But it's not just for any one (ethnicity); it's a celebration for everyone. We see it as a homecoming for everyone."That homecoming April 19, which will begin with exhibits, special presentations and lectures at 10 a.m., will feature both historical and cultural tours and opportunities to explore the museum.Featured throughout the day will be tellings of the Gullah Geechee story, lectures and performances by shouters, singers, dancers, conjurers and musicians. The events will end at 5 p.m.
"It's something that opens peoples' eyes, regardless of who they are," said Toure. "It's a time of fellowship, one of celebration. We'll have food and (non-alcoholic) drinks available, and opportunities for (attendees) to become involved in the events."Overall, it's an experience of living history. We're all taking a step back in time.
