The Brunswick News

A Brunswick couple was arrested Saturday after trying to convert $1,800 in coins they had allegedly stolen into cash at an Altama Avenue grocery store.

The coins had allegedly been taken from a residence.

A resident in the 100 block of Kensington Drive told police that his house had been burglarized and that a black leather bag containing $1,000 in nickels, dimes, 50-cent pieces and quarters, as well as a cookie jar containing $800 in silver dollars, were stolen.

The alleged burglars had entered the house by kicking in the back door, according to the Glynn County police report.

On Saturday, Callista Smith, 19, and Jason Walker, 18, were arrested after trying to cash in approximately $1,000 in coins at the Coinstar machine inside Harvey's Supermarket at 4980 Altama Ave.

The Coinstar machine is a coin-counting vending machine. After loose change is put into the machine, it issues a voucher to redeem for cash at the store check-out.

When Smith handed the cashier the receipt, the cashier told him she could not issue him the cash because it was over $1,000, according to police.

The cashier allegedly called police because of the large amount of money.

Both Smith and Walker were arrested at the store and charged with one count each of theft by receiving stolen property.
