Isakson targets

gasoline prices

U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., says temporarily suspending the accumulation of oil during a time of high prices is the least the federal government can do.

Isakson and 97 other senators voted on an amendment that would require the U.S. Department of Energy to halt further deposits of domestic crude oil into the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve as long as the price of crude oil remains above $75 per barrel. Wednesday, the cost of a barrel of crude had risen to $124.

The amendment required 60 votes to pass.

"There are no quick fixes in dealing with this issue, but there are things the federal government can and must do," Isakson said. "Temporarily halting deposits to the reserve sends the signal to the global market that the United States will take measures to address excessive oil prices."

He said he is disappointed that another amendment – this one to increase the nation's domestic supply – failed 42 to 56. Sixty votes were needed for it to pass.

"Given our dependence on foreign energy in this country, it is critical for us to consider the development of our untapped domestic energy supplies," Isakson said. "With skyrocketing gas prices, we must seek every way possible to increase the domestic production of energy."
