
Knights rally for win

The Brunswick NewsThe Frederica Academy baseball team pulled out an exciting 7-6 win Friday in their opening game in the Georgia Independent School Association Class AA state playoffs.Trailing Gatewood 7-2 going into the bottom of the seventh on their home field on St. Simons Island, the Knights proceeded to score five runs to take the first game in the best-of-3 series. The game was actually tied 2-2 entering the seventh. Gatewood struck for four runs in the top of the inning before the Knights came back in the bottom of the frame."Without a doubt, we were definitely fortunate to win," said FA coach Steve Trawick. "However, our guys showed a lot of character. To come back and win speaks volumes."Zach Hicks belted a two-run single with the bases loaded to tie the game 6-6. Tanner Rogers then drew a walk to load the bases again before Blake Cohen walked to bring in the winning run.
Cohen also was the winning pitcher for the Knights after recording the final two outs in the seventh. He relieved Clayton Heery who worked 6 1/3 for the Knights (14-5), allowing two earned runs while striking out eight and scattering six hits.For Heritage, the No. 3 seed from Region 3-AA, Spencer Cornelia went the distance and took the loss. He struck out 10 and allowed six hits, three of those coming in the seventh along with four walks.Adam Higgins was 2-for-3 with a double for the Knights, the No. 2 seed from Region 2-AA.
The series resumes at 11 a.m. today at Frederica. A third game will follow if needed.
