Red Wing players pester goal
Sat, May 10, 2008

The Associated Press

The Dallas Stars plan on helping Marty Turco by getting the pair of Detroit Red Wings out of the way Saturday night in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals.
The problem is, teams have been trying to do that with Franzen for two months and Holmstrom for three years since the league made it tougher to clear out such powerful pests.
Franzen has scored an NHL-high 27 times since March 2, a 27-game roll that includes a league-high and franchise-record 12 goals in the postseason.
Holmstrom averaged about 15 goals in the six seasons leading up to the locked out 2004-05 season, and would've likely doubled that production for a third straight year had injuries not sidelined him for much of the season.    Full Story

'Old' men lead way
Sat, May 10, 2008

The Associated Press

Three years ago, Funk won The Players Championship at 48, making him the oldest winner of this prestigious event. Perry snooped around the house and found the crystal trophy, rubbing his hands on it.
"I got a good look at his trophy," Perry said Friday. "That guy inspired me."
In demanding conditions on the scary Stadium Course — wind that gusted to 35 mph and temperatures that pushed 90 — Perry kept his wits and his patience on his way to a 2-under 70 to build a one-shot lead.
It was the kind of day that can turn hair gray, not that the leaders needed any help.    Full Story

New surface at Darlington track faster, but also slick
Sat, May 10, 2008

The Associated Press

But the two-time NASCAR champion was one of the many drivers to struggle with Darlington's repaved surface, which is smooth and speedy and caused Johnson to wreck twice during Friday's two practice sessions.
"I really have no idea what happened," said Johnson, a two-time Darlington winner. "I guess it's a combination of the track, the tires and this car, and I have a feeling my wreck was one of many we're going to see Saturday night."
Based on the first two days of action, Johnson probably is right. He went to a backup car after smacking the wall on the third lap of Friday morning's session, then had to change the splitter on his second car after his second accident.
Reed Sorenson spun in the first session and wrecked in the second, as did Paul Menard and Robby Gordon.    Full Story

Manings want more Super days
Sat, May 10, 2008

The Associated Press

The patriarch of America's reigning first family of football wants sons Peyton and Eli to keep going back to the Super Bowl.
Just not at the same time.
The Manning family celebrated Peyton's first NFL championship when the Indianapolis Colts won the 2007 Super Bowl. Then came an encore when Eli guided the upstart New York Giants to this year's title. What's more, each was the game's MVP in this remarkable brother act.
"I'm being greedy here, but I'd love for each to go back to another Super Bowl and each win another Super Bowl or more," Archie said in an interview with The Associated Press. "But as a parent, not against each other. Obviously it would be a long shot, but if they ever played in the Super Bowl against each other, it wouldn't be fun.    Full Story

Duke back to make title run in lacrosse
Sat, May 10, 2008

The Associated Press

Yet the reigning national player of the year — who crouched to the turf and couldn't fight back the tears when Duke's 2007 season ended — will suit up Saturday along with Dan Loftus, Tony McDevitt, Nick O'Hara and Michael Ward to open the NCAA tournament. It's the moment they've waited for since returning for a rare NCAA-granted fifth year that restored the season lost after three teammates were falsely accused of rape in 2006.
Now, after two narrow championship losses in three seasons, the "Fives" are down to their last title shot in careers that have seen the Blue Devils rise, fall, then rise again.
"We're playing with house money," Danowski said. "We're just going with it. Last year was our year to be sentimental. Now it's 'This is it, so we might as well have fun with it."'
The Blue Devils (16-1) are the No. 1 seed in this year's NCAA tournament and face Loyola of Maryland, the team of formerly charged and now-exonerated ex-teammate Collin Finnerty.    Full Story

Celtics shutting down James
Sat, May 10, 2008

The Associated Press

On Friday, James hardly missed.
It's so easy when the Boston Celtics aren't around.
Cleveland's superstar looked relaxed and upbeat on Friday as he and the Cavaliers, down 0-2 in the Eastern Conference semifinals, studied film and shot around while trying to figure out how to solve Boston's boa-constricting defense.
Over the first two games, James shot 19 percent (8-of-42) from the field. The All-Star forward committed twice as many turnovers (17) as he had field goals (8). He's 0-for-10 on 3-pointers, and his 16.5 points per game average is 13.5 lower than his league-leading mark during the regular season.    Full Story

Sorenstam, Ochoa battling at tourney
Sat, May 10, 2008

The Associated Press

Two holes later, Sorenstam answered. And then again at the par-4 16th, rolling in a birdie putt from about 8 feet away after Ochoa briefly drew even with a tap-in from an inch.
So it went Friday in the Michelob Ultra Open, where sometimes driving rain and two rain delays did little to put a damper on a friendly duel between the game's best players.
Sorenstam followed a 64 with a 66, leaving her at 12 under, three better than Ochoa, whose bogey at the last hole gave her 68, and Jeong Jang, who matched Sorenstam with her 66.
"I'm right there, so I'm excited," Ochoa said.    Full Story

Falcons going camping
Sat, May 10, 2008

The Associated Press

Ryan, the No. 3 overall selection in last month's NFL draft, is the Falcons' quarterback of the future, but can that future begin as early as the 2008 season?
The Falcons have 2007 starters Chris Redman and Joey Harrington returning at quarterback. Also back is former Georgia quarterback D.J. Shockley, who missed last season with a knee injury and has never played in a regular-season game.
Redman finished the team's 4-12 2007 season as the starter. Harrington opened the season as the starter. Ryan could have the opportunity to move past the veterans as a rookie.
First-year Falcons coach Mike Smith says he's open to the idea of a rookie starting at any position.    Full Story

Colleges recruit using cameras
Sat, May 10, 2008

The Associated Press

The Alabama coach is doing a different kind of networking these days — all from the comfort of his office. Saban is among a handful of college head coaches using video conferences to chat with recruits because they can't meet in person.
A new NCAA regulation — dubbed the "Saban Rule" — is keeping coaches from making those traditional visits to high school campuses during the spring evaluation period that runs through May.
Web cams have hardly replaced telephones or text messages as the preferred mode of talking to recruits. But, said LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette, they are without a doubt the wave of the future in long-distance communicating with high school players.
Saban and Southeastern Conference rivals Les Miles of LSU and Phillip Fulmer of Tennessee are using the Internet tool. Others among several dozen schools contacted by The Associated Press are considering or have considered it.    Full Story

UPS inks deal with Derby winner
Sat, May 10, 2008

The Associated Press

The shipping giant is trying to capitalize on Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown, whose minority owner named the horse in the company's honor.
The company said Friday it has signed a marketing agreement with jockey Kent Desormeaux and Big Brown's owners. UPS, also known as United Parcel Service, will be the exclusive marketing partner of the Big Brown team.
The deal calls for the company logo to be the sole corporate sponsor logo on Desormeaux's racing pants during the Preakness Stakes on May 17 and the Belmont Stakes three weeks later.
The jockey also will don a UPS cap after the races. Brown is the main color on UPS' delivery trucks and the word and color are a focus of its advertising.    Full Story
