A former Glynn County public school teacher and a former Glynn County school board member will challenge incumbent Ray Snow in the District 1 board of education race.
Republican Ingrid Metz, a teacher for 29 years in the Glynn County school system and current part time teacher at St. Francis Xavier School, has been in the audience for every board meeting the past three years.
She said she felt it was time to be on the other side.
"I feel we need quality education back in Glynn County," Metz said. "I have talked to parents who say they don't feel their children are getting the same quality of education they received."
To do that, Metz wants to streamline the central office, which she said is top heavy with administrators.
If elected, Metz hopes to reorganize to allow teachers more time for instruction and less time jumping through hoops.
Republican Earl Perry, a developer who served on the board from 2003 to 2007, said he is running because he feels his experience with the school system's budget will be useful after several years of state education budget cuts.
"I want to get back and work on the budget," Perry said.
He said he wants the budget controlled more by the board instead of by administrators.
While serving on the board previously, Perry advocated the building of The Golden Isles Career Academy, which he now hopes to see flourish if he is elected.
Incumbent Republican Snow, a retired project manager and Air Force master sergeant, is running for his third term to ensure completion of several projects.
"I'd like to see completed some of the things we have started," Snow said.
In addition to raising enrollment at the career academy, Snow said he would like continue the process of creating continuity throughout the school system while ensuring E-SPLOST 2 projects are completed on time and under budget.
Snow said he also wants to ensure taxpayer money is being spent wisely. If he is elected, Snow said it will be his final term as a school board member.
